Position Summary

The Trading Analyst position supports Crude, Feedstocks & Refined Products Trading Teams by providing commercial related analysis, actionable market insights and relevant, useful trading tools. The Commercial Team at MPC is a cross-functional organization that interfaces with a wide range of internal and external parties to plan, optimize, and execute the trading and supply activities of MPC with the goal of maximizing economic margin.

This Trading Analyst position is a growth opportunity for a highly motivated individual that has a strong aptitude and a keen interest for a commercial career. This role will provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to gain an understanding of trading and supply activities while performing complex and critical functions on a commercially integrated team. The successful candidate will be an experienced analyst with relevant commercial experience and is a self-starter that thrives in a dynamic, fast paced trading floor environment. Supply & Demand modeling and market fundamentals analysis experience along with excellent communication skills are critical.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Commercial Trading Team with near-term and short-term regional market fundamentals along with Supply & Demand modeling analysis that enables actionable trading activity.

  • Lead feedback discussion with Traders on PnL results and underlying drivers for gains and losses.

  • Develop methodologies to benchmark and track PnL from trading, supply, and optimization activities.

  • Liaison with IT to develop and manage commercial focused trading tools, dashboards, and reports.

  • Engage with industry counterparts and internal resources to gather market intelligence to continuously improve understanding of markets, enhance Supply & Demand models, and develop trading strategies.

  • Backfill on Trading desks and engage with external counterparties and internal resources to optimize and execute the supply & trading operations plan.

  • Provide analytical support in the modeling and evaluation of new business opportunities and strategies.

  • Execute a variety of ad-hoc analytical work and presentations as required by commercial leadership team.

  • Be the point of contact for data subscription vendors and host market presentations from 3rd party vendors.

    Preferred

  • Experience with PADD 2 & 3 Crude/Refined Products Supply & Demand modeling and US Exports/Imports.

  • Experience with subscriptions and data sets including Genscape, EIA, Kpler, Energy Aspects, IRR, Eikon.

  • High proficiency in Excel. Basic competency in data visualization tools such as Tableau and/or Power BI.

  • Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear, precise, and actionable manner.

  • Passion for process excellence focusing on building streamlined, sustainable processes & automated tools.

    Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, marketing, economics, accounting, or related field of study required.

  • Six (6) or more years of experience in a commercial, risk, trading analytics, scheduling or marketing required.
