POSITION SUMMARY:

Marathon Petroleum is seeking a Process Control Engineer at its refinery located in Detroit, Michigan. This position reports to the Process Control Supervisor and supports process control activities for plant operations as a member of an Area Team.

The Process Control Engineer will be assigned a specific area within the refinery with responsibilities of daily monitoring and troubleshooting of process control applications and configurations. Control engineers will apply state-of-the-art technology regarding process control and optimization, to improve process safety, and to increase the economic efficiency of refining operations. Control engineers work in a team environment with unit operators and engineers of other disciplines to maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize existing refinery assets. Control engineers will track emerging technology and will interface with corporate refining technologists to help determine future strategies and investments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain performance of installed controls. Improve stability, robustness, economic performance, and HES performance of existing controls.

  • Enhance refinery economics by maintaining knowledge of Product Control Targets, economic drivers, and constraints limiting profitability. Maintain knowledge of plans for changing operating conditions and equipment modifications.

  • Support new advanced control solutions to maximize profitability and HES performance.

  • Initiate, develop, and implement process control strategies on DCS equipment.

  • Support and maintain safety instrumented systems, and compressor control systems.

  • Maintain and improve operator performance by improving the HMI displays, and control loop performance.

  • Drive alarm rationalization efforts with the area team to improve alarm metrics.

  • Support Operations on process control strategies, advanced control applications, DCS systems.

  • When required, provide support to Capital and Expense projects associated with new or modified process units/equipment and DCS obsolescence projects.

  • Act as a lead or a participant in incident investigations and participate in the MOC process.

  • Support area team unit PHAs and LOPA.

  • Participate in refinery on-call support program, with on-call assignments rotating weekly between process control group members, and to provide immediate off-hours response when needed.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree (or above) in an Engineering discipline required (Chemical Engineering strongly preferred). (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

  • Minimum of two years of experience in refining or petrochemical industry in roles such as (but not limited to) a process/unit engineer, process control engineer, or instrument engineer required.

  • Control System proficiencies preferred: Honeywell Experion PKS, Triconex Safety Instrumented System, Aspen Tech APC, Foundation Fieldbus Instrumentation, and Wireless Instrumentation.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and pass a hair drug test and physical.

  • A valid driver’s license is required. (MPC determines validity status)

  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.

  • Travel requirement is 5% or less.
